Buy or Sell a Business in Essex County

Essex County is the second most densely populated county in the state, after Bergen County.  The most notable community in Essex County is arguably Newark- the largest city in New Jersey with a population of over 280,000.  Essex County is a very diverse area - with dramatic differences in demographics.  Towns such as Livingston, Millburn, and Montclair are considered quite affluent, standing in sharp contrast to the lower earning Newark, Irvington, and others.   This contrast gives Essex County a "something for everyone" feel when it comes to buying or selling a business.

What Sets Essex County Apart for Buying or Selling a Business?
There are a number of key differentiators that vary by area.  Taken as a whole, however, there are some consistent themes.
  • Home to Large Corporations
  • Many large and well known companies either call Essex their home or at least have large facilities there.  Notables include Anheuser-Busch (right next to Newark Airport), Hoffmann-LaRoche, ADP / Automatic Data Processing, Inc., CIT Group, Grainger, Dun & Bradstreet, PSE&G, Net2Phone, and Prudential.  Many companies thrive by working with these giants, some of whom are an "anchor customer" for the many businesses and companies that surround them.

  • Vast Labor Pool
  • Much of Essex County is "working class," which can be a significant benefit to employers.  Low-cost labor abounds for unskilled jobs, and with a large population and great transportion, access to skilled labor is very favorable as well.
  • Proximity to New York City
  • Essex County lies within easy commuting distance to New York - whether it be by train (PATH trains, NJ Transit, and AMTRAK are all options) or highway, getting in and out of New York is simple.  This, combined with lower rents and labor costs than New York,  has been a significant selling point for many companies.
